Whaler Beam Installation & Removal Dubai | Al Mrooj
The Problem: Whaler Beams Are Structural Lifelines
Whaler beams — horizontal structural supports used in basement excavations, retaining walls, and shoring systems — are temporary but critical. They hold back earth pressure and prevent wall collapse during construction or demolition. Removing a whaler beam before the permanent structure is ready to take the load can cause wall failure, basement flooding, and adjacent property damage. In Dubai, where high water tables and sandy soils are common, whaler beam work is high-risk structural engineering. It requires load calculations, sequential removal plans, and often the installation of replacement supports before the whaler is touched. A standard demolition contractor without structural engineering oversight has no business touching whaler beams.
Our Whaler Beam Process
Al Mrooj provides whaler beam installation, modification, and removal for basement and retaining wall projects.
Phase 1: Structural Assessment. Our engineer reviews the shoring drawings, calculates current loads, and designs the removal or modification sequence. Temporary supports are specified if needed.
Phase 2: Support Installation. If the existing whaler is being replaced or removed, we install temporary hydraulic struts or additional walers to maintain wall stability during the transition.
Phase 3: Cutting & Removal. The whaler beam is cut using diamond wire saws or oxy-acetylene torches (for steel beams). Sections are lowered using chain hoists or mini-cranes.
Phase 4: Monitoring & Handover. Wall movement is monitored using tell-tales and inclinometers during and after removal. The site is handed over with a structural engineer’s sign-off.
For basement demolition after whaler removal, see our building demolition services.
Equipment & Capability
Our whaler beam fleet includes diamond wire saws for concrete whalers, oxy-acetylene and plasma cutting rigs for steel whalers, hydraulic strut jacks for temporary support, and chain hoists for controlled lowering. All work is supervised by a structural engineer.
Compliance & Safety
Whaler beam work requires a DM structural alteration permit and a method statement signed by a registered engineer. We conduct daily inspections of temporary supports, monitor wall movement every 4 hours during removal, and maintain emergency shoring materials on-site. Workers wear fall protection and hard hats at all times.
Proof: Basement Whaler Removal in Downtown Dubai
In 2025, Al Mrooj removed 8 steel whaler beams from a 3-level basement in Downtown Dubai. The basement was being converted from parking to retail, requiring larger column-free spans. We installed temporary hydraulic struts, cut the whalers into 3-meter sections using plasma cutting, and lowered them via chain hoist. Wall movement was monitored continuously — maximum recorded movement was 2mm, well within the 10mm tolerance. The structural engineer approved the work without requiring remedial wall reinforcement.
