Concrete Scanning Dubai | GPR & Rebar Detection | Al Mrooj
The Problem: You Cannot See What Is Inside Concrete
Cutting or coring into reinforced concrete without knowing what is embedded inside is structural roulette. Post-tension cables, electrical conduits, water lines, and rebar are invisible to the naked eye. Hitting a live 415V electrical conduit can electrocute a worker. Severing a post-tension cable can compromise an entire floor slab. Striking a chilled water line can flood a basement and halt the project for weeks. In Dubai, contractors are legally liable for damage caused by unmapped cutting. A GPR scan before cutting is not optional — it is due diligence. Yet many contractors skip it to save a few hundred dirhams, risking hundreds of thousands in repairs and criminal liability for worker safety.
Our Concrete Scanning Process
Al Mrooj provides ground-penetrating radar scanning and concrete imaging for demolition, renovation, and structural modification projects.
Phase 1: Site Assessment. We identify the scan area, concrete thickness, and reinforcement type. The client provides structural drawings if available.
Phase 2: GPR Scanning. We scan the concrete surface using a Bosch GPR PS 1000, moving the antenna in a grid pattern across the target area. The radar emits high-frequency electromagnetic pulses that reflect off embedded objects.
Phase 3: Data Interpretation. Our trained technician interprets the radargram to identify rebar depth and spacing, post-tension cable paths, conduit locations, and voids. Results are marked directly on the concrete surface with color-coded paint.
Phase 4: Reporting. A formal report is issued with 2D cross-sectional images, depth measurements, and recommendations for safe cutting or drilling zones. This report can be submitted to DM or the structural engineer for approval.
Before any concrete cutting project, we recommend pairing scanning with our concrete cutting services.
Equipment & Capability
Our primary scanning equipment is the Bosch GPR PS 1000, which detects metallic and non-metallic objects in concrete up to 150 millimeters deep. For deeper scans or slab-on-grade applications, we use the Proceq GP8000 with stepped-frequency antenna technology. All scans are conducted by technicians trained in GPR data interpretation and concrete pathology.
Compliance & Safety
GPR scanning is non-destructive and emits no harmful radiation. It is safe to use in occupied buildings, hospitals, and food preparation areas. Our scan reports comply with DM structural alteration submission requirements and are accepted by all major structural engineering consultants in Dubai.
Proof: High-Rise Core Cutting in Business Bay
In 2025, a main contractor in Business Bay planned to core drill 12 holes through a post-tensioned slab for new HVAC ducting. Al Mrooj scanned the 300mm-thick slab and identified three active post-tension cable bundles directly in the proposed drill paths. We relocated the drill centers by 150mm, avoiding cable damage. The contractor completed the work without incident. The structural engineer approved the as-built locations without requiring remedial work.
