The Problem: Every Penetration in Concrete Is a Structural Risk

Creating openings in reinforced concrete for pipes, ducts, cables, or elevator shafts is not a simple drilling job. A misplaced hole can sever a post-tension cable, weaken a load-bearing wall, or create a crack propagation path that compromises an entire slab. In Dubai, any core drilling in structural elements requires a DM structural alteration permit and a method statement showing rebar and cable locations. Standard rotary drills fracture concrete and snap rebar. Diamond core drilling is the only method that produces clean, circular openings without spalling or micro-cracking. The tolerance requirement on most Dubai projects is ±2 millimeters — impossible with conventional equipment.

Our Core Drilling Process

Al Mrooj follows a four-phase process for every core drilling project.

Phase 1: GPR Mapping & Marking. We scan the drilling location with a Bosch GPR PS 1000 to map rebar spacing, post-tension cable paths, and embedded conduits. The structural engineer approves the exact drill center points before work begins.
Phase 2: Equipment Setup. We select the core drill based on diameter and depth: handheld units for holes up to 150mm, rig-mounted drills for 150mm to 600mm, and stitch drilling for oversized or non-circular openings.
Phase 3: Execution. Water-cooled diamond core bits drill through concrete and rebar in a single continuous operation. Water slurry is collected and filtered. The extracted core cylinder is preserved for structural engineer review if required.
Phase 4: Finishing. The hole edge is ground smooth. A final GPR scan confirms no hidden cables were damaged.

Equipment & Capability

Our core drilling inventory includes Hilti DD 150-U handheld core drills for diameters up to 150mm, Hilti DD 350-CA rig-mounted systems for diameters up to 600mm and depths up to 1 meter, and Tyrolit stitch drilling rigs for irregular openings. All bits are diamond-impregnated for reinforced concrete. Water recycling units keep sites DM-compliant for dust and slurry control.

Compliance & Safety

All core drilling in structural elements requires a DM structural alteration permit. Post-tensioned slabs demand cable location confirmation before drilling. Water suppression is mandatory under DM dust regulations. Our operators hold Hilti factory certifications and DM trade licenses.

Proof: Hospital HVAC Upgrade in Al Barsha

In 2025, Al Mrooj drilled 42 core holes ranging from 200mm to 450mm diameter through post-tensioned slabs at a hospital in Al Barsha. The work had to proceed during night shifts to avoid disrupting patient areas. Using GPR mapping and rig-mounted diamond core drills, we completed all 42 openings in 8 nights with zero cable damage and no dust complaints.
