The Problem: Concrete Cutting Is Surgery, Not Demolition

Structural concrete cutting in Dubai is not demolition — it is precision engineering where a deviation of even 2 millimeters can compromise the load-bearing integrity of an entire building. Cutting through reinforced concrete without damaging rebar, post-tension cables, or adjacent structural elements requires specialized equipment and structural engineer approval. Angle grinders and jackhammers are banned on structural work because they fracture concrete, snap cables, and create micro-cracks that spread through slabs. A single severed post-tension cable in a high-rise transfer slab can trigger a AED 200,000 repair, structural re-certification, and a stop-work order from Dubai Municipality. Every cut in a load-bearing wall or transfer slab requires a DM structural alteration permit and a method statement signed by a registered engineer. For full structure removal rather than precision cutting, see our building demolition services.

Our Concrete Cutting Process

Al Mrooj follows a four-phase methodology for every concrete cutting project. Each phase is designed to maintain structural stability while delivering millimeter-accurate cuts.
Phase 1: Structural Assessment & Marking. Before any blade touches concrete, a structural engineer marks the exact cut lines on the surface. We then conduct a ground-penetrating radar scan using a Bosch GPR PS 1000 to confirm rebar spacing, post-tension cable locations, and embedded electrical conduits. Cutting outside these marks risks structural failure, cable damage, and project shutdown. The GPR data is attached to the official method statement submitted to DM for approval.
Phase 2: Equipment Selection. We select the cutting method based on concrete thickness, reinforcement density, and site access constraints. For walls and slabs over 500 millimeters thick, we deploy Hilti diamond wire saws. For vertical cuts up to 30 meters high, we use track-mounted wall saws. For circular openings such as pipes, ducts, and elevator shafts, we use diamond core drills. For ground slabs and pavement, we use flat saws with up to 1-meter blade diameter. Equipment selection is signed off by the project engineer before mobilization.
Phase 3: Execution. All cutting is water-cooled to prevent diamond blade overheating and to eliminate respirable silica dust. The cut is made in a single continuous pass to avoid joint misalignment or spalling at the edges. For post-tensioned slabs, our operators cut between cable bundles — never through them. Water slurry is collected and filtered through on-site recycling systems to comply with DM environmental regulations.
Phase 4: Removal & Finishing. The cut section is lifted out using vacuum lifters or mini-cranes to prevent edge chipping. The exposed cut face is then ground smooth to the structural engineer’s specified tolerance, typically within ±2 millimeters. A final GPR scan confirms that no rebar or cables were damaged during the operation. For door and window openings in structural walls, we use concrete core cutting for clean circular and rectangular penetrations.

Equipment & Capability

Method statement and permit handling — if the job needs Dubai Municipality approval, we prepare it. According to Dubai Municipality regulations, structural cutting and demolition work requires prior approval and safety documentation, which is why our team manages the entire application process on your behalf.

The equipment used on a concrete cutting site determines precision, speed, and safety. Al Mrooj maintains a specialized fleet for structural cutting work. Our Hilti diamond wire saws use continuous diamond-impregnated cable loops to cut through reinforced concrete walls up to 1.2 meters thick with zero vibration and near-zero dust. For high-rise facade modifications and vertical wall cuts, our Husqvarna track-mounted wall saws operate by remote control up to 30 meters high. Our diamond core drills produce clean circular openings from 50 millimeters to 600 millimeters in diameter for elevator shafts, HVAC ducts, and plumbing penetrations. Flat saws with up to 1-meter blade diameter handle ground slab cutting and expansion joint creation. All water used during cutting is collected and filtered through closed-loop recycling systems, keeping the site DM-compliant for environmentally sensitive areas. Our concrete cutting teams frequently support villa demolition projects requiring boundary wall separation without structural damage.

Compliance & Safety

Every structural concrete cutting project complies with Dubai Municipality structural alteration codes and UAE HSE federal regulations. All cuts in load-bearing elements require a DM permit and an engineer’s method statement. Post-tensioned slabs demand cable location mapping by GPR before any blade touches concrete — cutting through an active cable is classified as a serious safety incident under DM guidelines. Water suppression is mandatory under DM dust control regulations; dry cutting is prohibited on most Dubai construction sites. All operators hold Hilti and Husqvarna factory certifications plus DM trade licenses. Diamond blades undergo daily tension and wear inspection to prevent blade snap, which can propel fragments at high velocity.

Proof: Business Bay Transfer Slab Modification

In early 2026, Al Mrooj was contracted to cut four openings measuring 3 meters by 2 meters in a transfer slab at a commercial tower in Business Bay. The slab was 800 millimeters thick, post-tensioned, and contained 32-millimeter rebar at 150-millimeter centers with active post-tension cables running through the span. Using Bosch GPR mapping to plot cable paths and Hilti diamond wire saws for the cuts, we completed all four openings in 6 working days with zero cable damage. Tolerance was held within ±2 millimeters on every edge. The structural engineer inspected the work and approved it without requiring remedial reinforcement or additional sign-off. The project passed DM inspection on the first visit.
